How China should treat Tibet

April 25, 2008

In the Straits Times forum today, Mr Tan Keng Leck says that the creation of a modern nation through military might is injustifiable. In that case, USA should return Texas to Mexico, France should return Alsace and Lorraine to Germany, France should also return Corsica to Italy. The Russian empire today that resulted from the conquests of Ivan the Great and Peter the Great should be dismantled and all conquered lands returned. Israel sits on land taken from the Arabs, should this be returned as well? The island of Sakhalin used to belong to Japan, now it’s Russian soil. Should it be returned too?

Keng Leck also says that China shouldn’t interfere with the Dalai Lama as the latter is the embodiment of Tibet’s spiritual essence. But Keng Leck forgets that the Dalai Lama is also Tibet’s political head in exile and as political head, the actions and intentions of the Dalai Lama can be more politically motivated than it appears to be religiously motivated.
