Job enclaves? Employer’s first priority is profitability

Dear Straits Times,

I refer to the 7 Mar 2011 letter by Mrs Anuradha Singh.

Mrs Singh asked if the charge that foreign nationals prefer hiring their own countrymen over Singaporeans has been statistically proven. It matters not whether the charge has been statistically proven. One foreign national doing that is one too many.

Mrs Singh reasoned that any employer’s top concern is profitability so anyone who contributes to profitability will be hired. But many jobs can be done by both foreign nationals or locals. Both can contribute to profitability. It is for such jobs that foreign nationals should not be preferred over locals.
