GE: PAP introduces fourth batch of new GE candidates

Dear Mr Ang Hin Kee,

I refer to the 30 Mar 2011 Channel News Asia report of your comments at the unveiling of the 4th batch of new PAP candidates.

You said you joined the PAP because you believe in working through difficult problems and not opting for easy solutions. You mean PAP’s mass import of foreign workers is working through difficult problems and not opting for easy solutions? PAP’s built-to-order which frees them of the task of judiciously balancing housing supply and demand is working through difficult problems and not opting for easy solutions?

You said you do not want people who just import solutions or just oppose what we have working today. Isn’t going high rise an imported solution to our land constrains? Isn’t underground trains an imported solution? Isn’t the membrane technology to process water an imported solution? Many of our solutions are imported ones. What’s wrong with imported solutions if they are good ones?

If the HDB pricing mechanism is working well today, why the sudden slew of property cooling measures? If foreign worker policy is working well today, why is there a need to re-calibrate the ‘S’ pass? So clearly we are not opposing what is working today. We are opposing what is not working today.

We don’t want people who merely regurgitate what the PAP says.

Dear Mr Vikram,

I refer to the same report.

You said the older generation are happier with the PAP because they have seen the growth. The older generation may not realise that growth in their flat price came at the expense to new generations who ended up picking up the tab and paying higher prices. Growth to our economy is really a part of East Asian growth nurtured essentially by East Asian culture and values rather than by the PAP.
