Young candidates for parliament or legislative assembly

Dear Straits Times,

I refer to the 8 Apr 2011 Insight articles on young candidates for parliament or legislative assembly. Amongst the young candidates listed are:

– Mr Chio Cheng Thun, aged 22 at the 1963 elections
– Mr Chia Thye Poh, aged 22 a the 1963 elections
– Mr Ng Kah Ting, aged 23 at the 1963 elections
– Mr Lim Chin Siong, aged 22 at the 1955 elections

In his 12 Apr 2011 article “Far from being champion”, Mr Rohit Brijnath refers to the 21 year old Mcllroy as the “boy trying to learn to become a champion” and a “kid who just needed his mum”. While the statement may be unfair, it does illustrate how society’s perception of maturity has changed over the years.

The maturity level of a 22 year old in the 1950s and 1960s is very different from the maturity level of a 22 year old today. Examples of young candidates in the past do not justify young candidates today.
