Why Hougang flats’ value is lower

Dear MM Lee,

I refer to the 30 Apr 2011 report of your comments on public housing.

You said the value of Singaporeans’ flats have grown over the years. You omitted to say that with that, the price of all future flats would have grown as well so future generations will end up paying more.

You said the government has given the people a valuable asset that is guaranteed to make money. But you omitted to say where that money comes from. That money will come from our children and our children’s children.

You asked where else has the government produced homes for every family. You should also ask where else has the government forcibly taken away all the land on the cheap. If you didn’t take away our land, why would we need you to build flats for us?

You said we cannot lose as though there are no losers, only winners. But there are losers. The losers are our children and our children’s children who will end up paying for the higher price of our flats.

You said here we own a home. But here we are also saddled with a housing mortgage that we will end up paying for the rest of our lives with our retirement money.
