Time to call the bluff on racism

I refer to the 1 May 2014 TR Emeritus article “Time to call out racism in Singapore” by Andy Xian Wong.

Andy claims that the use of words like “cockroaches”, “f*cking vermins”, “scum sh*t heads” and “please f*ck off and die” against the local Filipino community is racism pure and simple.

The following is a non-racist example of the use of the words “f*cking vermins” online:

cooleo fucking vermin piece of shit
• This example relates to an angry parent over a school outing requiring a $5 deposit

The following are non-racist examples of the use of the words “shit head” and “scum” online:

Scum shithead
• This example is about someone who is angry with the Internet Brigade

shithead scum
• This example is someone describing dangerous, cocky drivers on the road

The following are non-racist examples of the use of the words “fuck off and die” online:

SGForums now fuck off and die
• This example is about someone who is fed up with a boring topic

Xia Xue fuck off and die
• This example is about a blogger who is pissed with her readers and asking them to buzz off

The following is a non-racist example of the use of the word “cockroach” online:

Sammy fucking cockcroach
• This example is about an online individual who is angry with another online individual in a thread concerning an online story about a man falling in love with a prostitute

Hence, offensive words that have been labeled as being racist in the recent Philippines Independence Day saga have absolutely no racist meanings in and of themselves. These are words commonly used in a multitude of other situations so their use in and of themselves cannot be proof that the users of those words have racist intents. Anyone who claims that racism is committed because these words are being used actually has no case because their so-called evidence is no evidence. They can say the words are rude, offensive and uncalled for. These are obvious, no one will challenge them. But to claim that racism is involved will require a lot more than just quoting these words. Because these are merely words of anger but not necessarily words of racism. There is no reason to say that Singaporeans said them out of racism rather than out of anger over a multitude of other reasons like sense of indignation over the insult to our country’s sovereignty, unfairness, job loss and so on.

Finally, the following is an example of the exact same words “fucking vermin” being used by a Filipino on a Singaporean about a year ago:

Ricardo fucking vermin
This example is taken from temasektimes and posted on June 8, 2012

Why are our leaders coming out so strongly now to condemn Singaporeans of racism when a couple of years ago when the same supposed offence was committed the other way round, they didn’t make the same defense for us Singaporeans?
